Is LVP Flooring a Smart Choice for Bathrooms?

Bathroom floors have one job description with three lines: survive water, feel decent underfoot, and look good doing it. Luxury vinyl plank has quietly become the best answer for most homes here, and it's what we recommend in the majority of our projects. Here's the honest case.

It's actually waterproof — not 'water-resistant'

Quality LVP is waterproof through the entire plank. Splash it, drip on it, let a kid flood the bath mat — the plank doesn't care. This is the difference from laminate, which swells at the seams the first time real water sits on it. (Laminate in a bathroom is a mistake we tear out regularly.)

It's warmer and kinder than tile

Tile in an Ohio January is a small daily cruelty. LVP is noticeably warmer underfoot, slightly cushioned, and — relevant for our aging-in-place clients — more forgiving than tile if a fall ever happens. Slip-rated textures handle wet feet well.

It suits older homes' imperfect floors

Older Toledo-area subfloors are rarely flat. Tile telegraphs and cracks over imperfect substrates or demands expensive leveling; LVP tolerates minor imperfection gracefully. We still fix what needs fixing — a soft, moisture-damaged subfloor gets repaired, not covered — but LVP doesn't demand perfection tile does.

The honest caveats

  • Quality varies enormously — thin bargain planks dent, and their wear layers scuff through in a few years; we install thicker planks with commercial-grade wear layers
  • Standing water can still find seams and edges over time — install matters: tight seams, sealed perimeter, proper transitions
  • It isn't tile at resale in luxury homes — in most homes here, though, buyers read fresh LVP as a clean, modern positive

As part of a bathroom project, new LVP typically adds only a day — and it's the difference between a new shower in an old room and a finished bathroom.
